By simulating long-term working conditions, aging tests ensure that the display will perform reliably in real-world applications, whether indoors, outdoors, or in demanding DOOH environments.

Why Do LED Displays Need an Aging Test?

LED displays, like all electronic systems, are subject to performance drift and failure risks over time. The aging test helps address these challenges by:

  1. Identifying early defects: Faults such as poor soldering, loose contacts, or defective chips are exposed under power-on aging.
  2. Ensuring parameter stability: Brightness, color consistency, grayscale, and white balance are tested to confirm stable performance.
  3. Simulating long-term operation: Heat generation of driver ICs, LED light attenuation, and power supply stability are examined under extended use.
  4. Meeting industry standards: Tests align with reliability benchmarks like VESA and IEC 62341 to meet customer and industry demands.

Types of Aging Methods

  • Constant Current Aging: The most scientific and widely used method, where LEDs are operated under steady current conditions to mimic real-world usage.
  • Overcurrent Aging: A faster diagnostic method where LEDs are stressed with adjustable high-frequency constant currents. This helps manufacturers identify weak components and predict lifespan within a shorter testing window.

Both methods aim to ensure only high-quality, stable LED products leave the factory.

The LED Aging Test Process

Aging tests follow a structured and methodical process:

  1. Module Setup
    • Install modules onto the aging rack.
    • Connect power supply, sending card, and receiving card.
  2. Environmental Simulation
    • Use constant temperature and humidity chambers to simulate extreme conditions (heat, cold, humidity).
  3. Initial Testing
    • Power on modules and inspect for faults: dead pixels, dark spots, uneven colors.
    • Record brightness, color coordinates, and white balance.
  4. Continuous Power-On (2–4 Hours)
    • Detect immediate failures such as flicker or sudden dead lights.
  5. Performance Checks
    • Brightness attenuation test under all-white screen load.
    • Color gradient verification for smooth grayscale transitions.
    • Flashing test (1–10Hz) for response time and driver IC stability.
    • Checkerboard or scrolling text tests to identify bad pixels, ghosting, or crosstalk.
  6. Weather Resistance Simulation
    • Cycle between high temperature/high humidity (60°C/85%RH), normal conditions, and low temperature (-20°C) to test durability.
